ultramarathon training and nutrition?

Posted by admin | 30/03/10 | Tagged Training Nutrition

Hi. I am running my first ultramarathon in December (The North Face Endurance Challenge outside of San Francisco). I am running the 50k event and am worried about bonking and cramping. How can I avoid these? What should I eat and drink? Also, the elevation gain is ~7000ft gain and ~7000 ft loss during the 31 miles. I am doing the SF marathon this Sunday as a training run.

I usually take nuun water and gu gel on long runs. Will this be sufficient or will I need more?Just a little bit of new information today for all those internet marketers looking for the best new up and coming release for 2010. Be on the lookout of Niche Blueprint 2 coming on January 11, it is going to be huge and change the ecommerce marketplace.

Theoretically, a 50K is not that much different from the marathon, so you could probably do pretty well with the same routine.

I know at the Chicago Lakefront 50k, they had extra snacks, like nuts, candies and even soda at the water stops. Those extra snacks helped me. I normally just use my goos during a marathon.

Some people are able to survive a marathon without goos even. I guess it would depend on what your body is used to.

I see ads for supplements all the time and wondering if you could give me some insight on which ones actually work?

Also, if you can tell me how much did you have to take and if you can give me a rough estimate of how much they costed?
Learning about the in’s and out’s of internet marketing can be difficult unless you have a great mentor and where can that mentorship be found? If you really want to succeed online you must get yourself a copy of Commission Blueprint 2.0 created by Steven Clayton and Tim Godfrey. The tools alone are worth the cost alone. Best wishes!

Thanks.

Less acidic alternatives to sports drinks?

What are alternatives to Sports Drinks that aren’t so acidic?

I assume you’re looking for electrolytes because you get dehydrated while exercising out in the sun – that’s the primary reason to drink sports drinks:) Pedialyte will work the same way – or gatorade in flavorsJust a little bit of new information today for all those internet marketers looking for the best new up and coming release for 2010. I have had shoulder knee leg wrist problems for years and it is really really dampened my performance in life, what can be done in terms of physical therapy, surgery, supplements, weight training, or nutrition (please help)?

I have issues for years too, I final decided to go see a pain doctor. They started giving me shots and told me to see a physical therapist. The shots have helped, I adjust some things to not aggravate the areas that I have issues with. The shots help though, wish I did this earlier. But I just started.
Talk to your primary doc and see what they say about going to see a pain doc about your issues. Good Luck.

I don’t think it matters..but just for the heck of it..I choose
IN THE MIDDLE!!??
The vitamins will sometimes make you feel sick if you take them on an empty stomach..they need the food so they can "mix with the group" ..this makes them Happy campers and all is well.! ♥

I am 24 years old and have not been to college or had any higher education.
I am passionate about food and health. I live in a town of about 30 000.
Am I too old to go to University (I live in Australia, so it isn’t called college here).
Is it too late?
Where do I begin? They have a place called TAFE over here, kinda like Community College in the U.S, but the courses they offer have nothing to do with what I am interested in.
Can someone please give some advice???

Thanks!

G’day,

Definitely not too late mate! 24? You’re just a spring chicken ;)

Depending on your current employment and highest education level, you MIGHT able to study in a uni via distance learning/online education as a mature age students. Some TAFE colleges do have these study methods as well. As long as you have internet connection (as I believe you do, since you are able to post this question), you are set to learn. Unfortunately you did not mention which town you are in now. However it doesn’t really matter, since with distance learning method, you can actually be anywhere in the world.

A quick look on some Uni courses that offers nutrition courses as follows:
Deakin Uni (www.deakin.edu.au)
Uni of SA (www.unisa.edu.au)
Uni of Western Sydney (www.uws.edu.au)
QUT (www.qut.edu.au)
Charles Sturt Uni (www.csu.edu.au)
Uni of Canberra (www.canberra.edu.au)
Uni of Newcastle (www.newcastle.edu.au)
Uni of Wollongong (www.wollongong.edu.au)
Monash Uni (www.monash.edu.au)
Flinders Uni (www.flinders.edu.au)
La Trobe Uni (www.latrobe.edu.au)
Curtin Uni (www.cut.edu.au)
Uni of Sydney (www.usyd.edu.au)

You can try to check if the course is available via distance learning. I know that Deakin Uni has a good reputation for distance learning study.

Good luck for your study :)

No running endurance?

A few days ago I ran the 800metres in my school’s sports day. I had never ran a race as long as that in quite a few years and I didnt know what to expect. At the beggining of the race, I ran at mid-pace and found myself in 1st position. From then on I decided to run a bit faster. However, as I passed the 400 metre mark, fatigue kicked in, my legs were numb, my chest hurt badly and I could taste blood in my mouth. I carried on running until I knew I had to stop or I would faint. Yet, I carried on until the last 100 metre, where I was overtaken and I finished second. After the race I was sick and coughed up blood. Any tips on what I should do, I really want to be able to run long distance races but I dont think I’m capable of them. Any tips on nutrition or training regimes?

Well done by the way.

It depends on the long distance you are talking about… if you mean 800m as a long distance then you might want to do certain things, if you mean something along longer than 10k as long distance then you might need to do something else.

The main thing to do is to get out there and run.

If yuo are running 800m try running a mile or so (1600m) in a training session, a bit slower than your 800m time – to give you stamina. Try a session of short sprints every now and again (sprint 200m, rest and repeat), and try a session pof 800m runs.

For longer distances you need to do pretty much the same. Long distance run coiuld be 4 miles at an easy run, sprint sessions could be the same and instead of race distance runs, try half to 3/4 race distance runs

not including whey protein shakes… are products like Hydroxicut and Muscle tech good for the body?

these products are ok for you, as long as you know how to use them. Using muscle building supplements has to be combined with proper workouts.

I recommend you check out http://www.mymuscleexercises.com/

they list these and many other muscle building supplements including what they do and how to use them. I get my supplies from there.

Nutrition and bodybuilding?

Is it a good idea to take whey protein immediatly after lifting weights if a half-hour of cardio is going to follow the weightlifting? Should it be taken after both activities or inbetween? Thank you for your advice.

It’s usually a good idea to keep your weights and cardio 24 hours apart. Cardio such as running raises cortisol levels and lowers testosterone – this will cause a decrease in muscle repair, and will sabotage your gains, so I’d suggest doing weights and cardio on different days.

Whey protein is absorbed very quickly (~30 minutes), so it works best when taken immediately after a workout. Drinking it before cardio will also prevent some of the muscle catabolism that results. I would personally drink the shake right before, or immediately after the lifting, and before the cardio.

I’m not talking about the Law or the Legality of Steroids. What I want to investigate is why people think that using steroids is any different than any of the developments and advancements in sports equipment, training, nutrition, and physcology. I’d also like to focus on Baseball, Track and Field, and other American Sports.

Basically, It gives the athlete a physical edge over the player that does not use steroids. Imagine being in a sport where you have no possibility of winning because you do not take steroids, but the other person does. He beats you each and every time because the steroids give him that advantage. Is that fair to you? Not really, because at that point its no longer a level playing field. I believe the use of steroids for personal reasons would be ok, but not when a competition is involved. Unless all players are steroid users, then its not a fair game.
