Tips For Choosing Yoga Training Courses

Posted by admin | 30/04/10 | Tagged Training Nutrition

Yoga in Western countries may have started life as a something of a hippy niche, but over the last 20 years, it has entered the mainstream at a phenomenal rate. With this popularization of an ancient Indian tradition, there has been a huge growth in organizations offering yoga teacher training. Gone are the days when students had to travel to India to gain qualifications. But the plethora of courses has created its’ own problems – not least in the question of quality and whether a course is recognized by the appropriate local and international associations. The prospective student must also ask themselves a number of important questions, the most fundamental of which is the type of yoga they wish to be trained in. But also, the wider question of what direction they wish to take their training in once completed. This article will address all of these points, and help provide a framework with which students may better choose amongst the many courses offered.

There are more styles of yoga available today than there has possibly been ever. Some represent a continuation of older traditions, that are relatively unchanged. This includes hatha yoga, and styles by Desikachar and Iyengar. Others represent a synthesis of different methods, even whilst being shrouded in mystical origins. For example, some have suggested that Ashtanga yoga is not derived from the yoga Korunta, but from a synthesis of traditions that may have included early acrobatics!

Some styles of yoga are very modern, and evolved more out of an adaptation to the West. Bikram yoga is a good example of this – and perhaps a very extreme one, given that Bikram copyrighted ‘his’ yoga poses and they way they were taught, despite yoga being essentially in the public domain.

Most people who train as teachers in yoga do so in a discipline that they have been practising already. This does make logical sense, as it’s important to be passionate about what you do for a living. There is the additional experience that people will have with a particular style of yoga that no doubt makes it easier than starting from scratch in a different style.

But other issues may come into play when choosing a yoga school. Is the style of yoga you like well supported in your area? Is there sufficient demand for that style? Understanding who these particular styles of yoga appeals to will help later on when you set up your own yoga business, as it will guide your marketing, choice of location, logo, and business identity. It’s worth thinking a little bit about these things before you make a time and financial commitment to getting qualified.

Finding out whether your course is accredited nationally and internationally is an important step. There are various governing associations at different levels around the world. For example, in the UK there is the British Wheel Of Yoga. In Australia, the government keeps a list of accredited training courses through the Australian National Training Authority. For a yoga specific association, try the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia. Globally, there is the International Yoga Teachers Association, which is available in many countries. There is also the American Yoga Association, Yoga Scotland, and the European Union Of Yoga.

Each of these organizations may have different standards by which they measure courses. But they do provide a good guideline for selecting providers with a minimum level of professionalism, integrity, and quality. You could look at contacting teachers who have gone through their training to find out what they thought of the course, and perhaps go to a few of their classes to get a feel for what is being taught.

Before going into any course, it’s a good idea to have some sense of the bigger picture. For example, are you looking at combining yoga with other healing modalities, such as massage, nutrition, meditation, or some combination of all of these. There are some teaching colleges that integrate yoga with other modalities, both locally and abroad in India. For the sake of continuity, and ease of integration, it may be easier to look at this before any study is actually done. It may prove easier to study with an all-in-one provider who will provide a clearer way to integrate these different aspects of health.

In some ways, this broad integration of yoga with health is more closely aligned with the true nature of yoga, according to some teachers such as Desikachar. But Indian style yoga is not the only one that offers this approach, with the Japanese ki, or Ki yoga often integrated with macrobiotics and shiatsu.

If you’re interested in going more deeply into yoga training for your own personal practice, as opposed to a prelude to teaching, studying abroad can be a truly rewarding experience. If you’re looking for teaching qualifications, it may be wiser to choose an institution in your own country, at least initially. Because it should be adapted to Western learning styles, the structured environment it provides will be easier to learn in.

Yoga training can be intensely rewarding, and life changing in many ways. Provided you choose a course that is accredited, in a style of teaching you like, and that has good community support, it could be the start of a great new career.

So long you eat the right food, keep all good habits, do exercises, you will remain healthy. Do not be carried away by star models of Hollywood, when you watch them in glamour magazine covers. So you have heard of strenght training, aerobic exercise, the daily food pyramid, and the list goes on and on. You would like to lose some weight, and have decided you are going to do something about it. You could always hire a professional certified fitness trainer. If you live in Maryland, Northern Virginia or the District of Columbia my company is at http://www.shapeshifterfitness.com however if not and you have decided to give it a shot on your own, I will lay the ground rules for you.

The biggest mistake someone can make is to increase their activity level, and cut way back on their nutritional intake. So the first place to start is with nutrition, or more specifically, Performance Nutrition because there is a big difference. First you need to understand the daily recommended caloric intake is a scientific approach.

What it comes down to are two important things, first being thermodynamics. So without getting too scientific, think of it as calories in and calories out. Now everyone has what is called a RMR, or resting metobolic rate. This is the amount of calories your body burns in a restful state. So if you were to lay awake on the sofa all day and watch television the amount of calories you burn to keep your heart beating, and lungs working, along with all of your other bodily functions is your RMR.

Now you have to factor in the activity level, another words your exercise program, which should include strength training that builds lean muscle, and helps you burn more fat, and aerobic activity (2-3 days) that helps increase your ability to use more oxygen, another words strengthens your heart muscle, wiithout all the weight lifting. Remember when you are building muscle, it ways more then fat so you want to balance it out.

So now how do we tie it all together to have the perfect program for weight loss with the right combination of nutrition, strength training, and cardio. Before you strength train make sure you have some good carbs about an hour before you lift, and after you are done, get some good protien. The protien will help in the muscle repair, and the carbs will help fuel your workout. Try to have a 50/30/20 ratio of 50 percent carbs, 30 percent protiens, and 20 percent healthy fat.

Now also remember you are trying to create a defecit from your calories, but you want it to come from activity, and not from lack of nutrition. If your doing cardio for an hour that burns 450 calories, your RMR is maybe 1500 calories, but you have only taken in 1200 calories for the day, that is a 300 calorie defecit that came from lack of nutrition, plus the 450 calories burned, this will stop your body from burning fat, and slow your matabolism.

So in closing, try to match your caloric intake with your activity level, and create a defecit from the activity and don’t starve yourself, use some fad diet, or magic pills because it does not work in the long run, exercise and sound nutrition are the best tools you have to losing weight.

Nutritional supplements could be just what you are looking for to sort out your various health issues if you are suffering from conditions caused by poor nutrition. If you happen to be the kind of person who is always hurried and stop at any one of the drive-thrus you pass as you are driving along, you are certainly not getting the best nutrition. Sodas, French fries and burgers have very little nutritional value. Usually they have much too much ingredients that are detrimental to your health. These fatty foods can actually require your body to consume the few nourishing ingredients that they have for digesting those components that are unhealthy.

Dietetic Supplements Can Delay the Number One Killer

Studies show you are more liable to die from bad nutritional habits than from a major accident. It has also been proven that cancer as well as heart disease can often prevented by taking nutritional health supplements. Several of these ailments are triggered off by not having enough the vitamins or minerals that boost your immune system and keep it to operate most effectively. Consider vitamins and mineralos as well as herbs as the tools that are needed by the body to keep serious illnesses at bay. When a person’s body does not have the appropriate tools, most diseases are invited to take over.

Which are the Supplements that are Absolutely Essential?

It is sometimes difficult to decide on which are the necessary supplements and which supplements are really not necessary. Several stores stock a huge range of supplements of various types. Most stores will usually keep supplements that contain vitamins as well as those that contain herbs. The actually fact is every body does not need the same nutrients. Any vitamin supplements you decide to take, should be taken only as a supplement, to offset your nutrient levels with the food you eat. If you regularly refrain from eating sufficient fruits and vegetables, you would require a vitamin supplement. You should know though, if you are looking a special supplement that will help with boosting memory as well as energy, you will be able to find a herbal line of supplements that can solve the problem.

Nutritional Guides & How They Help

The best thing to do should be to get yourself a detailed guide on herbal supplements that also features details on vitamins. A good guide should be impartial and break down the value offered by each supplement, and also the few brands that offer the highest nutrients. The best nutritional supplement will be made up of a mix of top notch nutritional ingredients. As you are likely to experience with other products, there are products that would pass any quality test and those that would be sure to fail. Your best bet would be to get a guide that offers a break down of the ingredients contained in individual pills, what results you can expect, and a few equitable reviews from people who have been taking supplements.

Safety Issues Surrounding Nutritional Supplements

While most people will not suffer from any reaction brought on by nutritional supplements, you should make it a point to consult with a qualified practitioner prior to starting any kind of regimen. If you currently have a health condition of any kind or are currently on a course of medications, speak to your doctor about supplements that are not harmful in any way.

If you had to have one or the other which would you take? You may or should be making that decision. As you probably know, health care costs are through the roof.

It can and does put a lot of folks in a pinch. They can’t pay them even if they have insurance sometimes. Medical bill can easily lead to bad credit and financial disaster.

Also, I just heard on the news the other night how some emergency rooms are having to turn people away. They send them to other hospitals and people are having to wait hours in emergency rooms for care, or even a bed or place to sit. They don’t expect that to improve any time soon in most cities.

The best plan is preventative medicine. Stay as healthy as you can so you won’t have to worry about medical bills or waiting to see a doctor. Just like you plan for retirement, you should be planning for good health for your “Golden Years”.

You may not be able to tell that you are slowly killing yourself or working your way up to future health problems now, but unless you are paying attention to what you are eating and getting some kind of physical activities you will probably not be able to enjoy a lot of things later in life or sooner.

Being able to travel, play with your grandkids, or even breath, or walk might just not happen.

Eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong foods is not costly or difficult. You just need to take a little time and with a little help you can have excellent health for years. Add some daily fitness to your routine and improve your health even more.

You don’t have to be overweight to start a diet, or weight loss program. Those are the best places to learn proper nutrition and good foods from the bad foods, and also how to exercise.

After studying nutrition and weight loss for many years now, I have to caution you on some of the ridiculous diets I have seen though. I almost want to laugh at some of them, but it is not really funny, it is mostly scary. If you see a diet or weight loss plan that says something like, you will lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks, don’t do it. That is worse for your health than not going on a diet at all. You will suffer through something it and it will more than likely cause health problems later. If it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

A good healthy, nutritional diet or weight loss plan will have a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates (the complex ones, not simple carbs), fibers, and fats (the good ones, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated). Your body does need all of these things. It needs to be nourished all day to keep your metabolism up and burning off calories and fats. Study after study has proven this, but still people seem to want to try to change mother nature. I don’t understand. They do starvation diets, cut out carbohydrates, try living on just one kind of food, and all sorts of crazy things that just don’ t work. Sure, maybe short term, you might lose a lot of weight for a short time, but why just short term. Learn how to eat the proper nutrition and it is easy to do it for the rest of your life. You can actually eat a “bad food” every now and then and live through it with any good diet or weight loss plan. I found it is best to enjoy a “bad food” every now and then and not make eating healthy a torturous thing. One bad meal doesn’t mean you won’t lose weight that week if you are dieting. It’s all about knowing and teaching yourself what bad foods and drinks do to your body and then keeping them to a bare minimal, or stop consuming them completely. There are so many good alternatives that I am sure you will enjoy. Like dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. It’s that simple.

The other important part of good health is physical activities. Your body starts losing muscle with age. Of coarse you need all your muscles for a lot of reasons. A toned body will burn fat and calories quickly, and it will protect your joints and just plain keep you fit and feeling that way. Aerobic exercise is good, but strength exercises I do believe is much better. A mixture of both is best.

You don’t have to devote all of your time and your life to diet, nutrition, & exercise. Just a very small part of it and that hour or two a day that you spend cooking healthy, eating healthy, and exercise will pay off greatly in the coming years. Think of it this way, it is like paying yourself thousands of dollars a day for spending the time, because that is what you will be saving in medical bills later on if you don’t. Not to mention all the things you won’t be able to do because of bad health.

One last thing. Don’t procrastinate. Start now! There is no reason to put it off. If you say you are going to wait till after Christmas, or New Years, why? Like I said earlier, you can still have a “bad food” or a “bad meal” and then just start back eating the right way afterwards. Learn about good nutrition now and get started. Just think, the better your health and food intake is now, then it won’t be as bad by Christmas or New Years. You will be able to easily drop the extra calories you gain then. Also the better your nutrition is, the less likely it is that you will catch a cold or the flu. Get and stay healthy starting today.

Your Cardio Workout Routines are Wrong

Posted by admin | 30/04/10 | Tagged Endurance Nutrition

Below is an interview about cardio workouts done by Craig Ballantyne. This presents a great example of how cardio workouts are typically misused by exercise enthusiasts in their attempts to lose body fat. You’ll never get those six pack abs if all you keep doing are the same boring cardio routines over and over. Expand your thinking, and shrink your waistline!

Everybody assumes that you must do endless hours of cardio workouts to get ripped six pack abs. But this is simply not true. In fact, if you quit wasting so much time with boring slow cardio routines and change your workouts much more strategically, you will get those six pack abs much faster than you thought was possible!

Let’s look into how one female cardio workout fanatic finally lost her excess belly fat and revealed her six pack abs with the help of the innovative Turbulence-Training workouts!

Craig: C-J, let’s start with a bit of background on yourself and what your goals were when you discovered interval-training and strength training.

C-J:

Ok, I’m a female in my middle 30’s and your typical office professional who spends many long hours in front of the computer.

With regards to fitness and nutrition, I grew up realizing the importance of being active and staying healthy. So while I’ve stayed active for most of my life, I recently realized that I still had a lot to learn about both training and nutrition.

When I first discovered the Turbulence-Training Workouts, I was looking for an improvement in body composition. I had been introduced to weight training a year or so earlier and had made some really good progress, but had gone past that “new stimulus” effect, and really needed something different to kick my results up again and break the plateau.

Craig: How were you doing before?

C-J:

Well, during grad school and working full-time I let my fitness slip for the days and evenings tied to a computer, and the joys of eating at restaurants once or twice a day. I had gained about twenty pounds and was at my heaviest weight ever at about 160 pounds. Once I finished night school, I added exercise and nutrition back to my priority list and lost those twenty pounds, mostly from running five days a week.

The 2nd stage started when I discovered weight training. I was at about 142 pounds at the time and about 28% body fat. After about six months I lost another 8-10 pounds and 7% body fat.

So when I started the Turbulence-Training program, I had already made decent progress as I was down to about 133 pounds and 21-22% bodyfat.

Craig: What were your workouts like before Turbulence Training? Why did they not work as well? How have you since improved upon those workouts?

C-J:

Before Turbulence Training, I was a “same-pace” cardio fanatic, and I ran 3-5 miles three times a week and strength trained using a four day body part split routine. This plan worked ok for about six months or so, but then I just stalled out and the plateau set in. I’m not exactly sure what the culprit was, but I just knew that I needed a different type of workout program to try.

So when I first started strength training and interval workouts I was skeptical that such a short workout only three times per week would be good enough. I soon realized that strength training and intervals kept the intensity levels higher during EVERY workout, so the 3 days and 2 super sets were actually much more efficient than my four day body part split and three days of running. I also got on an interval training program and reduced my slower “same pace” cardio runs to about one day a week.
Just a little bit of new information today for all those internet marketers looking for the best new up and coming release for 2010. Be on the lookout of Niche Blueprint 2 coming on January 11, it is going to be huge and change the ecommerce marketplace.

Craig: How have the interval workouts and strength training helped you improve your shape? What benefits and results have you achieved? What are your improvements compared to your before stats?

C-J:

I am definitely stronger, leaner, and faster than before.

Strength wise, I can finally do chin-ups and pull-ups, something I’ve always wanted to be able to achieve. I have also improved my 5k time by two minutes. I also finally have the muscle tone and athletic body shape that I have always wanted.

When compared to my before stats, I have had to throw the scales out the window and use the mirror and compliments I’ve received as my guide since I have gained a few pounds of lean (but sexy) muscle so the scale weight hasn’t changed much even though my body composition has improved. Also, my clothes have gotten looser and smaller and I’m also making fairly significant strength and speed gains. I can also actually see a visible six pack of abs now, which has always eluded me!

Craig: How do you feel in terms of energy and strength?

C-J:

My strength gains are most exciting to me, since I typically have high energy/endurance. I particularly like how my strength gains have transferred to improved running and biking.

The amount I can lift in the gym just sort of evolves, but when I can climb hills on my bike that I used to be foreced to walk, and finish 5k runs in times that were once way out of my reach, it feels pretty damn good!

Craig: What features do you like about TT-style strength and intervals?

C-J:

It is fun, time efficient, and intense. Plus it works like crazy! When I am in the gym, I know that I am making the most efficient use of my time.

Craig: Did you change your eating plan with the guidelines?

C-J:

Not a whole lot, but some. I was on a pretty good eating plan when I started TT strength and intervals, but I am constantly learning about making better food choices and looking to change things slightly here and there. Incorporating a post-workout recovery shake and getting as much variety as possible have been the biggest changes in my nutrition habits since I started the program.

Craig: What would you say to others that ask you about your workouts? Do you get a lot of comments from people?

C-J:

When people ask me about my workouts, I try to hold back some excitement so I don’t come off as a wild fanatic and overwhelm them.

I have had quite a few comments from others in my gym, either noticing how hard and smart that I am working out, or complimenting me on my progress. One woman even pointed me out and said “I want thighs like that!” to her friend. How cool is that!

It is always enjoyable to see friends or family or even co-workers that I haven’t seen in a while because they always remind me of the great progress I have made. It’s also exciting that I can show off my flat stomach now too with the sexy little six pack!

The best compliment I get now is in the form of imitation. Others want to know exactly what I do and ask me for tips to help them. They see that it works, want to know how I have done it, so they can try to apply it to themselves.

Craig: Thanks C-J! Keep up the great work with your time-saving Turbulence Training fat-loss workouts.

Components of a Good Diet for Natural Bodybuilding

The correct die is the point of emphasis here. Proper ensures the effectiveness of the diet. The appropriate diet for every individual varies slightly due to slight differences in body types which in turn are occasioned by varying mass indexes of the body fat. This means that a specific plan may bring optimally good results in one individual and bring harm in another.

However our bodies are a reflection of what we eat. Thus, if you have been consuming so much fat and are now overweight you need to take more ambitious and drastic measures while at the same time taking care not to create health-threatening changes to your body. For many people it is very important to have the perfect body. It is these sorts of bodies that people tend to crave for each and every day. There are different reasons however why people decide to train their bodies. For some it is all about gaining that stunning physique while for some it is to get rid of excessive body fat. Many people are therefore finding their way to the gyms and fitness centers so as to pursue their individual interests based on what they want to achieve with their bodies.

Remember that going to the gym does not mean that you are doing everything correctly, what you are doing can turn out to be counterproductive. While others opt to sweat it out in this manner there are some who go for the ultimate body sculpting technique which is liposuction. The results of such a cosmetic surgery are not always pleasant. If care is not taken, the person can fall back into the same predicament courtesy of poor nutrition habits. The best compromise therefore is to have a situation where one consumes the right food groups and nutrients and then tops this off by maintaining a well structures training regimen.

It is not always possible to access weight training equipment in the gym setup because people’s schedules vary. What everyone should know is that it is very possible to have equipment that you can use right from home. If you decide that this is the way to go for you be careful about how you go about your training and nutrition. It is always prudent to source for a professional’s help and advice.

What are the variety of training equipments available for you as you train at home?

When you are considering home workouts you can start by thinking about acquiring cardiovascular workout equipment. This equipment will help you to improve both your breathing and your blood flow.  Some of the equipment that you should consider acquiring in this respect are elliptical trainers, cross-trainers and treadmills. Apart from cardiovascular training you can think about strength training which will help strengthen your biceps and triceps. Such equipment will include free weights, dumbbells and barbells.

You have successfully tackled one half of the total fitness equation. The next half that remains has to do with the nutrition or what diet you are on. For the best results and a healthy lifestyle to boot the diet chosen must be completely balanced. This is in terms of the content of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. Good fats should also be factored into the diet.

The amount of calories that you take in on a daily basis will depend on the type of results that you desire. For individuals who need to gain muscle mass you will have to increase the amount of calories. For those who are however intent on losing body fat the vice versa is true. Nutritional Health in Sports

Posted by admin | 30/04/10 | Tagged Athletes Nutrition

Nutritional health is very important. The nutrients that we take in are practically the reasons why we are healthy or why we are not. It could also be a grid to determine if we can eventually become sports superstars or not. Nutritional health may be the main reason why you are tall, strong and have the skills to be good in sports. This is also vital for having a strong mind and a healthy body because of the fact that these nutrients fuel almost all bodily functions.

In reality, many people fail to achieve a high level of nutritional health. Some reasons why they are not adequately nourished is because of their lack of information. Some people do not even know that what they are eating is bad for them. Some food also lack nutritional facts that they should have on their labels. And some just do not care at all.

People also have this misconception that what is tasty is good for your health. It is really hard to resist unhealthy food because of their availability on the market. Media also advertise more on unhealthy junk foods rather than healthy ones. Unhealthy food may be a reason for us to be fat. If you want to keep healthy, you must first get rid of unwanted fats and be fit as possible.

Some athletes also have low nutritional levels because of certain factors. One is poor understanding of sports nutrition principles. They think that eating many will make the healthy.

Nutritional requirements also differ among people depending on their training program and personal characteristics like age, sex and body type. Their failure to recognize these may also cause malnourishment as they may take too much or less of their nutrients required.

Some athletes also diet too much compromising their nutritional needs. Their lack of knowledge on nutritional facts also contributes to it. Their lack of time and opportunity to eat and the tendency to skip meals is also one reason. Overeating is also a factor of malnourishment because you might eat and take in a lot of fats and unwanted chemicals that may be unhealthy.

The sports nutritional health can be broken down into the foundation of what food is basically made of namely proteins, carbohydrates and fats. We should get optimum amounts of these types for more energy and more muscle gains. You can only lose more than one pound of fat per week if you exercise properly and eat the right food instead of starving yourself. Starving will only bring you malnourishment.

If you are losing fat quickly by starving yourself, over dieting and doing too much exercise, you may be at a risk of slowing down your metabolism and your body might start using the glucose found in your muscles as a source for energy. That is why losing weight bit by bit for a long period of time instead of losing weight quickly is much more preferable.

There are toxins found in our fatty tissues and when we loose fat, these toxins are released back into our body. Losing too much fat in a short period of time means that you are releasing more amounts of toxins into the body causing us to be sick.

On your diet, try to avoid eating food with too much saturated fat because they are bad fats and will make you gain more weight. What you should do is to ingest unsaturated fats of the good fat because it will help you lose weight.

By eating good oils like deep-water fish oil, flax seed oil and linseed oils, you are actually aiding yourself as it rids your body of fatty deposits helping you lose more fat. This weight loss program actually takes a lot of time so only take measurements every two months to give you a better look on how your are progressing on keeping fit and sexy and how much fat you are actually losing.

I discourage you on taking those commercial diets because they will only set you up for failure and disappointment. These diets make you lose fat so quickly that when you try to start eating again more than you did while on diet, you will gain weight very fast. You should look for a way to lose weight in a slow and realistic rate.

Here are some tips: First is to stay away from white sugar and all other natural sweetener. You should also stay away from simple sugars and take in slowly digested complex carbohydrates. Eat food high in fiber in order to detoxify. And lastly, exercise. The right combination of exercise and nutrients will give you a high level of sports nutritional health.
