what they said they eat normal healthy food, maybe with some emphasis on protein.<br />
all the powders and supplements are good mainly for the manufacturers. eat low fat meat, fish (like tuna, salmon etc. ) Choose good carbs, not no carbs. The best sources of carbohydrates &#8211; whole grains, vegetables, fruits and and beans. reduce sugars.</p>

<br />The problem with nutrition is that it is bloated and saturated with pseudoscience. I can&#8217;t elaborate on it here but there is a brilliant book called &#8216;Bad Science&#8217; by Ben Goldacre that should shed some more light on this for you. All these supplements you take may very well do nothing. For example most people think Omega 3 is good for you, but all scientists know so far is that it either does nothing or can actually harm the body.</p>

<p>Collagen supplements may be a waste of money, depending on the results that you expect to see.  If you are expecting improvement in the appearance of your skin, there are definitely better ways to spend your money. </p>
<p>Collagens are proteins, long chains of amino acids.  A supplement containing collagens can be derived from a variety of different substances, including chicken bones. </p>
<p>There are a number of different types of collagens formed by the human body, each requiring different amino acids and other co-factors to form.  Combined, they make up 25-35% of the total body’s protein count.  They are the main components of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and skin.  They strengthen blood vessels and play a role in the development of tissue.  They are found in the cornea and the crystalline lens of the eye.</p>
<p>So, obviously, the proteins are important, but how important are collagen supplements?  Supplement manufacturers claim that they improve joint function, help prevent osteoporosis and bone loss; improve the skin’s health and appearance, help the body build muscle and burn fat.  Are these claims justified?</p>
<p>As a protein supplement for those that are exercising regularly and trying to build muscle, they improve the protein intake, without greatly increasing the caloric intake.  Since protein is needed to build muscle, they could be beneficial for that purpose. </p>
<p>Claims that they help you build muscle and burn fat, in your sleep are misleading.  You can only build muscle by exercising and increasing your protein intake.  Building muscle does, in fact, increase your resting metabolic rate, so you do burn more calories at rest.  But, collagen supplements aren’t magic pills.  If you don’t do the work, you won’t build the muscle.</p>
<p>As for the joints and bones, supplements containing multiple nutrients that include amino acids, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D are more beneficial.  Omega-3 fatty acids are also important. </p>
<p>When it comes to the skin, topically applied creams containing amino acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are more beneficial.  Short chains of amino acids, often referred to as peptides; support the production of new cells and fibers.  Certain peptide complexes have been shown to increase skin-cell proliferation by 160% after three days of use, when applied topically.</p>
<p>Minerals are necessary to balance the skin’s moisture content.  Antioxidants prevent and repair free radical damage in the skin’s cells.  Free radical damage occurs due to overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and exposure to environmental pollutants, such as smoke.</p>
<p>When you take collagen supplements, they are broken down to their component amino acids by stomach acid.  Whether those amino acids will recombine to form collagen or even if the body will use them, is unknown.  The only known benefit, as I mentioned above is to improve protein intake.  But, there are other supplements that are more effective, and less expensive, even for that purpose.</p>
<p>Good nutrition is important to all of the cells of the body and if you get the right nutrients every day, you can slow down the aging process and prevent chronic disease.  But, collagen supplements probably won’t help you do that. <p>The purpose of supplements is to compensate for nutritional deficiencies in the food we eat, or to correct deficiency conditions already in the body. True supplements are composed of whole food ingredients; they feed the body with balanced nutrients it can use to heal itself.</p>
<p> It is my belief that when the body has been starved of vital nutrients or has been abused from an intake of improper nutrition and toxic substances, supplements are needed to correct deficiencies. Many people take supplements of one form or another to ensure they are getting what may be deficient in the food they eat. </p>
<p>The business of supplements is a huge, multi-billion dollar industry, but not all supplements supply the life forces that the body needs to regenerate itself. Many vitamins sold in drugstores and even in healthfood stores are chemically derived, synthetic, and therefore do not contain the organic components required by the body to build health. In fact, they may actually contribute to vitamin and mineral imbalances. </p>
<p>When you buy vitamins or minerals, do you really know whether they are good for your body? Assuming that your body is deficient in certain vitamins, minerals, or enzymes, do you know whether your body can utilize the supplements you are buying to build health? Or, are they simply adding to the stress and toxic load the body must handle?</p>
<p>Natural Versus Synthetic</p>
<p>Supplements are not created equal! Natural vitamins heal. Synthetic vitamins stimulate, but do not heal. Dr. Royal Lee, who founded Standard Process Laboratories, notes that: Natural complexes differ from synthetic, crystalline vitamins in many ways: </p>
<p>1 They are colloidal, protein in nature, in the form of an enzyme or coenzyme. </p>
<p>2 The crystalline vitamin itself, in the natural product is in a critical combination and cannot be split off without destroying its biological activity. If separated, it must recombine with the other members of the complex before it can function as a nutrient. </p>
<p>3 The natural complex carries trace mineral activators, without which the vitamin fails as a biochemical catalyst. </p>
<p>4 If so-called, HIGH POTENCY crystalline vitamins are ingested, they must be put into proper combination, as a complex, before the vitamin function can be appreciated. Meanwhile, most (if not all) of the crystalline component is lost through the kidneys.</p>
<p>Natural complexes are ionically active, which is an extremely important factor for the absorbability of a nutrient. The smaller a nutrient is the more capability it has of entering into combination with other elements and forming the electrical matrix required to transfer energy to a cell. </p>
<p>Synthetic vitamins, due to their non-ionic structure, do not have this capability, nor are they complete complexes. Any food or vitamin must contain the appropriate live enzymes to be utilized by cells. Enzymes make transport of nutrients through cell walls possible. Live food comes complete with enzymes to assist with its digestion and assimilation.</p>
<p>Most vitamin and mineral supplements do not contain enzymes. A majority are produced or chemically processed in laboratories. Such mass-produced synthetic products are good for profit and shelf life, but they are stimulative, toxic, and detrimental to the body. They are unnatural and cannot be used by the body for health. </p>
<p>An example of a synthetic vitamin which is perpetrated as the real thing is ascorbic acid. The drug industry calls it vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C, but rather a fraction, the outside layer of the biologically utilizable vitamin C complex.</p>
<p>Likewise, alphatocopherol, which is sold as Vitamin E, is only part of the Vitamin E complex. As Richard Murray points out: &#8211; synthetic vitamins are not vitamins at all but synthesized Fractions of a vitamin complex &#8211; a mirror image duplication of just a portion of the real, biologically active and physiologically precise nutritional complex. There is no possible way that a fraction of a vitamin can be called a vitamin. </p>
<p>The analogy here is essentially the same as an automobile salesman handing you a wheel from a car and telling you the wheel is an automobile.</p>

<p>Well, if you are still buying synthetic vitamins, like most of the American public, you won&#8217;t be finding any supplements that are organic &#8211; they&#8217;re all just made in a lab.  However, if you have done your research and are convinced that whole food supplements contain all the necessary co-factors your body needs to process them and are far superior to synthetic vitamins, we think you do need to search out organic ingredients in your vitamins.  Most whole food supplements are concentrated because they are usually dried out and converted to a powder form and either put into a tablet or a capsule (and you should avoid tablets as they are often toxic and less absorbable).  This concentrates the nutrients, but will also concentrate any toxins like pesticides or heavy metals.  </p>
<p>Organic foods have also been shown, in general, to have higher vitamin and mineral contents.  So it is worth seeking out organic vitamins and minerals for your best health.  Consider some of the following information: </p>
<p>Organic Means More Minerals</p>
<p>Not only do organic foods have fewer chemicals like pesticides in them, but they have been shown in many studies to have higher levels of various nutrients.  An article in the Journal of Applied Nutrition studied the mineral content of organic vs conventionally grown apples, pears, wheat, potatoes and corn.  In general, the organic foods in this study had much higher levels of minerals:</p>
<p>Chromium was higher on average 78 percent<br />
Selenium 390 percent higher<br />
Calcium 63 percent higher<br />
Magnesium 138 percent higher</p>
<p>Organic Means Fewer Toxic Metals</p>
<p>In addition, this study showed that organic produce had much lower levels of toxic metals:</p>
<p>Mercury levels were 25 percent lower<br />
Lead 29 percent lower<br />
Aluminum 40 percent lower</p>
<p>Mercury, lead and aluminum are all toxic heavy metals with various dangers.  Mercury can cause neurological problems, lead lowers IQ levels in children, and aluminum has been implicated in Alzheimer&#8217;s.  You want to avoid these heavy metals in your vitamins if at all possible.</p>
<p>Organic Means Higher Vitamin Levels</p>
<p>Other studies have compared vitamin levels of organic vs conventional foods.  These studies showed that when certain pesticides were applied, it lowered some vitamin levels, especially the B and C complex vitamins and beta carotene.  B and C and beta carotene are all known as antioxidants and are necessary for our bodies to properly deal with all the chemicals that we are exposed to in our environment today (hmm, perhaps the plants used up some of the vitamin B and vitamin C and beta carotene in order for them to deal with the onslaught of the pesticides).  </p>
<p>In any case, these studies would lead you to believe that eating organic foods and taking organic whole food supplements means in general getting higher levels of vitamins.</p>
<p>Organic Means Fewer Pesticide Residues</p>
<p>It goes without saying that there are fewer pesticide residues on organic foods, since pesticides are not being used on them.  It is sad to say, however, that some pesticides are found even on organic foods because of pesticides in the water used for irrigation and from drift from adjacent fields.  However, the amounts of pesticides are often significantly lower if the crop is grown organically.  </p>
<p>Only a very few supplement manufacturers actually go a step farther and test every batch of incoming ingredients for the absence of pesticide residues.  It is worth it in our opinion to find vitamins made by these manufacturers.  Why ingest a product designed to increase your health and vitality that has pesticides concentrated in it?</p>
<p>Although it has been difficult to prove the adverse health benefits of consuming small amounts of pesticide residues on our foods, some people don&#8217;t need a study to tell them that chemicals that kill living things are not good for them.  Recent studies have shown a clear relationship between pesticides in women&#8217;s fat cells and an increased risk of breast cancer.  </p>
<p>Although we cannot always control our breathing in chemicals or what is in our water (although air and water filters can help), we can choose to eat more organic food and to use organic food supplements so as to reduce our risk.</p>
<p>So besides having a higher vitamin and mineral content, organic whole food supplements will be lower in toxins like heavy metals and pesticide residues.  It is worth seeking out organic vitamins and minerals for your best health.</p>
<p>Beyond Organic Vitamin Potency</p>
<p>In addition to looking for organic ingredients in your supplements, you might want to hunt around for one that is made of highly potent ingredients.  Depending on the richness of the soil in which it was grown, and how it was harvested and preserved, the nutrient content of various plants can vary by over 900 percent!  This means you can get something that runs from barely containing the nutrient that you are looking for to something that is spectacularly potent.  </p>
<p>Always ask about how the ingredients were grown and harvested if the manufacturer doesn&#8217;t discuss it.  Look for vitamins that come from ingredients grown in a &#8220;beyond organic&#8221; manner.</p>
