Most people are aware that nutrient timing is as important as nutrient composition. In other words, it’s not just what you eat, but when you eat it that gives optimal results. As the man says, “Timing is everything.” Consuming the right foods at the right time can have positive effects on body composition: which means more muscle and less body fat.

Health-conscious people are told to avoid simple carbohydrates, and for good reasons. It’s not true all the time and in every situation, however. Following a heavy workout, there is a metabolic “window” – so to speak – where the body preferentially shuttles glucose into the liver and muscles to replace lost glycogen via both insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent transport mechanisms. Translated, this means your body will shuttle carbs and protein into the tissues you want (muscle) instead of storing them as fat after a workout.

To carry the analogy further, the metabolic window doesn’t stay open indefinitely, so you need to take advantage of the opportunity while it lasts.

A number of studies have found that a post-workout drink containing simple, high-GI carbs and protein increases protein synthesis dramatically. The two work synergistically to create an anabolic environment that’s superior to either nutrient alone. In addition, some recent work suggests that a pre-workout drink may be superior to a post-workout drink, and consuming both may be best of all!

Research looking at the issue has gotten a great deal of attention in the sports nutrition world. One particularly interesting study, “Timing of amino acid-carbohydrate ingestion alters anabolic response of muscle to resistance exercise.” (Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 2001 Aug;281(2):E197-206), compared the anabolic responses to a carbohydrate and amino acid supplement taken either before or after resistance exercise. It’s counterintuitive to think taking in these nutrients before the workout is superior to post-workout, but according to this small study:

“results indicate that the response of net muscle protein synthesis to consumption of an EAC solution [carb/amino acid drink] immediately before resistance exercise is greater than that when the solution is consumed after exercise, primarily because of an increase in muscle protein synthesis…”

Since this study was published, several researchers have proposed that providing amino acids/protein and carbs both before and after a resistance workout represents the best of both worlds. This is the premise of the book “Nutrient Timing” by John Ivy and Robert Portman. They present compelling evidence that the right mixture of nutrients, taken at key points in the muscle growth cycle, will optimize improvements in muscle growth, strength, and power, as well as enhance recovery from exercise.

Overall, there’s a solid body of scientific evidence to support using a blend of fast-acting carbs and amino acids/protein for both pre- and post-workout nutrition. It’s definitely a “hot” topic among sports researchers. It’s also a topic that seems to create endless speculation and conversation with non-scientists looking to get the most of their time in the gym. Everyone wants to hear the latest word, it seems.

So what’s the latest word?

The place to discover cutting edge research on a topic is to attend conferences where researchers present their most recent findings. This is a much faster way of getting current info than reading scientific journals, as it can take many months (even years!) to publish the work researchers submit for review and publication.Learning about the in’s and out’s of internet marketing can be difficult unless you have a great mentor and where can that mentorship be found? If you really want to succeed online you must get yourself a copy of Commission Blueprint 2.0 created by Steven Clayton and Tim Godfrey. The tools alone are worth the cost alone. Best wishes!

Each year, I attend various scientific conferences that apply to my interests, research, and business. This year I attended the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) conference in Las Vegas. The ISSN is a relatively new organization and this was their third conference to date.*

A session on the role of nutrition in exercise and recovery was particularly interesting. One standout study**, “Effects of protein and carbohydrate on anabolic responses to resistance training” looked at the effects of carbs, creatine, and whey – taken alone and in different combinations – on LBM and/or strength. The conclusion was that the combination of all three (whey, carbs, and creatine) was the most effective and that there appeared to be a true synergism between these nutrients. This study also confirmed that these nutrients, taken both before and after training, have a greater effect on lean mass and strength than when taken at other times of the day. I don’t think that comes as a big surprise to most people “in the know” about such things, but it’s good to see it confirmed under controlled conditions.

The take home lesson is this: if you want to optimize your nutrition to gain muscle mass and strength, it’s vital to consume a combination of fast-acting carbs and protein during the workout “window.”

Here’s what I recommend: mix 30-50g of high quality whey with 75-100g of high GI carbs (such as glucose, maltodextrin, etc.,) and 3-5g of creatine monohydrate and drink half immediately before you hit the gym, and the other half immediately following your workout.

To make it extra simple, I use a pre-made carb drinks (e.g., TwinLab Ultra Fuel, etc.) and add the whey and creatine to that and mix it up. You can “roll your own” of course by buying various carb powders in bulk. I just like the convenience of the pre-made carb mixtures myself.

As you can see, I don’t use a complicated formula for the amounts of protein, carbs, and creatine to take pre- and post-workout. Why? Because – while focusing on such minutiae would make me look smart – it probably won’t have any effects on you. Following the K.I.S.S. (“Keep It Simple, Stupid”) system works best here. The above formula is more then sufficient to supply the nutrients required to take advantage of the metabolic window. Some people take it a step further by dividing the formula into three parts, to be consumed before, during and after the workout, but I don’t see the need for that either. I doubt there are any real benefits to it, but more research is needed there.

This isn’t a miracle mixture, of course. If your training and/or nutrition over the rest of the day aren’t up to snuff, this pre- and post-workout drink won’t make up for those shortcomings. In conjunction with a good training program and diet however, combining pre- and post-workout nutrition will clearly add to your success. And remember, it’s not rocket science, so don’t make it any more complicated then it needs to be.

7 Top Wedding Themes

Posted by admin | 08/08/10 | Tagged Sports Drinks

If you and your significant other are the type who find weddings boring and stuffy you may want to consider having a themed wedding. They can be very casual and light-hearted, and you will certainly be giving your guests something to remember.

A couple of things to keep in mind when considering a themed wedding: choose a theme which speaks to who you two are as a couple; make the theme easily accessible to others, don’t choose something so obscure that others might have trouble dressing for the occasion.

What are 7 top themes you might consider for your wedding?

1) Hawaiian or Beach Theme.

The good thing about a Hawaiian or beach-theme wedding is the amount of decorations you can find. You can make your own paper leis or paper palm trees, or find Hawaiian-themed items anywhere. Be sure to check the local thrift stores for anything tropical – dishware, shirts, dresses, etc. Just make sure all the decorations, as well as the attire, scream “BEACH.” And, you can cut down on the cost of champagne and serve Mai Tai’s or other tropical drinks.

You might think a Hawaiian or beach-theme wedding is just perfect for a summer wedding. Well, you’re right. But, a beach-theme wedding can also be fun during the wintertime as well, and give people a fun respite from cold, dreary weather. Just remember if you’re having a beach-theme wedding during the winter to hold it indoors. Those slinky Hawaiian dresses and breezy Hawaiian shirts can get a little cold in the snow.

2) Country Western Wedding Theme

Plan a shotgun wedding with a country western wedding theme. Western outfits are fairly easy to create or assemble, and a western cookout will surely keep your wedding reception costs down. You can either hire a company to have a western-style barbecue, or just use your own grill.

Western decorations are very easy to make or buy. Again, thrift stores can be perfect places to find boot-shaped vases, cowboy hats and shirts, or other western items for decorations. For music you can play country-western CDs or hire a country trio or band.

3) Wine Wedding Theme

For those of you into wine, a wine-themed wedding can be a great idea. You can hire a sommelier to put together a flight of wine for a reception tasting, or choose wines that mean something to the both of you. Perhaps the first bottle you ordered at a restaurant. Or a champagne dated the year you met.
Learning about the in’s and out’s of internet marketing can be difficult unless you have a great mentor and where can that mentorship be found? If you really want to succeed online you must get yourself a copy of Commission Blueprint 2.0 created by Steven Clayton and Tim Godfrey. The tools alone are worth the cost alone. Best wishes!

Decorations can include grapevines, wine bottles, or posters of wine regions. For wedding favors you can give your guests a bottle of wine with a personalized label of the bride and groom.

4) Butterfly Wedding Theme

Butterfly releases after the wedding ceremony are becoming quite popular with couples. If a butterfly release will be part of your wedding, you can make butterflies part of your theme with butterfly decorations.

5) Sports Wedding Theme

No matter what type of sports the bride and groom are into, you can turn it into a wedding theme. You could have a theme of a certain sport, such as golf or baseball, and decorate with items from those sports, with wedding favors reflecting the sport given to guests. Or, you could celebrate a certain team.

If you wanted to go totally casual the bride and groom can dress in attire from the sport, such as basketball jerseys, with all the guests dressing in costume as well. As for the bouquet that the bride throws? Maybe instead of a bouquet she’ll throw a football or toss a baseball.

6) Las Vegas Wedding Theme

Hire a few poker, roulette and craps tables and a few Vegas-style dealers and you have yourself a Las Vegas-themed wedding. Throw in an Elvis impersonator and you have yourself a wild Vegas-themed wedding. In most large cities there are companies which rent out tables and dealers, as well as any number of Elvis impersonators to choose from.

For wedding favors consider a pack of cards with the bride and groom’s picture.

7) Pirate Wedding Theme

Decorate your reception hall to look like an old saloon or the deck of a ship. Peg legs, hooks for hands and eye patches make nice touches to your pirate wedding costumes. You might consider using a treasure chest to store your wedding gifts.

As you can see, when it comes to wedding themes, the possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.

Everyone is in competition nowadays to look good and live healthy.

So to look good usually they go for dieting with the aim of losing weight as personality with overweight is not pleasing.

People diet for many reasons. Some are at an unhealthy weight and need to pay closer attention to their eating and exercise habits. Some play sports and want to be in top physical condition. Others may think they would look and feel better if they lost a few pounds.

Lots of people feel pressured to lose weight and try different types of diets. But if you really need to lose weight, improving your eating habits and exercising will help you more than any diet.

Dieting could be a solution if done in a right manner.

Unhealthy Dieting, especially extreme food-intake reduction and rapid weight loss, can have the following side effects:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression

  • Sinus
  • Muscle loss
  • Blood shot eyes
  • Gall bladder diseases
  • Acidosis

  • Irritability
  • Fainting

The best way to diet is to eat a wide variety of enough food to meet your body’s needs. Aim to eat more fruits and veggies, cut back on meats high in fat (like burgers and hot dogs), greasy fried foods, and sweets, and drink more water instead of sugary drinks like Sports Drinks or sodas.

Great Dieting Tips to loose weight safely:

  • Eat less. More often.
  • Don’t eat right before going to bed.
  • Kick the sugar habit.
  • Shop with calories in mind.
  • Reduce the amount of breads, chips, crackers, and salty snacks you eat.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Drink milk, including fat-free or low-fat milk.
  • Drink plenty of water (at least four to six 8-ounce glasses a day).

  • Don’t take diet pills.
  • Avoid seeing foods as "good" or "bad" or eliminating entire groups of foods, like dairy. If you eliminate entire food groups, you may miss out on important nutrients, like calcium
  • If you choose to become a vegetarian, talk to your doctor or dietitian about how to make nutritious vegetarian choices.

If I Had Been a Ruler for One Week

Posted by admin | 04/07/10 | Tagged Sports Drinks

IF I HAVE BEEN A RULER FOR ONE WEEK:

If I had been a ruler for one week, I would do a number of things to develop my country by leaps and bounds. Education, health sector, law and order are the roots of development. Besides, there are other factors such as business, Employment opportunities, sports etc. These all sectors can be never be developed unless the people of the country are not educated and don’t have a sense to differentiate between good and bad. Hence the education is the base of a developed country.

Education is central to development and a key to attaining the Millennium Development Goals. It is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and lays a foundation for sustained economic growth. Education is very important for our lives. Without education people wouldn’t have their high-developed machine and would believe that the Earth is a planet around that all another planets are moving. Unfortunately there are some places in my country, where not everyone has an opportunity to receive this formal type of education. The opportunities that are offered are greatly limited. Sometimes there are not enough resources to provide schooling. Furthermore because parents need their children to help them work in factories, have odd jobs, or just do farm work. The main obstacle in the development of any country is the country’s educational system. Firstly, I will take keen steps for promoting primary and higher education. I will make education free for all. As the primary education is base of the students so I will raise the standard of primary education by providing the students with the modern curriculum and good teachers, so that the students could compete in modern world. Secondly the higher education, which is the future of our country, I will establish as many universities as I can in one week and will provide these universities with modern facilities and PhD professors so that students studying in these universities could get modern education. I will link these universities with the foreign universities so that they may have students exchange programmes. I will also start distance-learning system and online degree programmes so that the people living in rural areas of the country can get the standard education. I will establish as many public libraries as I can in one week. In this way the education sector will develop and the literacy rate will go on increasing. Through these hard efforts the drop out rate of children will also be decreasing. I will modernize the I.T sector and will establish the I.T centers in the country. I will provide the skillful persons the dexterity to come forward to show their talent & skillfulness. I will create more and more jobs by establishing industrial areas in various cities of my country .In this way the country can develop in business field. The unemployment will no longer exist and the export of the country will be increasing, in this way the country will earn more and more. The loans, which were given to my country for its development by international banks, I will return back the whole money to them.

The second and one of the significant factor, which is health sector, can also be developed when we have good doctors and the good doctors come from the education sector. When the people will be healthy they will work for their country more and more. I will establish the good government hospitals, where no fees will be charged and these hospitals will be equipped with the modern facilities. So, that the people should not go abroad for the best cure. I will also run the various programmes in rural areas of the country for the awareness of various diseases such as aids and many other dangerous diseases.

The third and one of the most important factor, is the law and order in the country. Law and order is essential in all countries. In an orderly law-abiding country people can plan ahead, work in safety and do business in trust. In most modern societies order means stability. The guarantees of this order take place in the form of laws. Laws are rules and customs that the citizens of a community regard as binding upon them and can be enforced by the courts. Laws provide boundaries so that people realise where and when they are committing an offence. One of the principal objects of the law is to safeguard the rights of citizens. Our basic rights are what give us our freedom in daily life. The freedom of speech, the right to a fair trial, personal freedom.for this purpose I will impose strict laws in the country and will implement them. I will impose strict sanctions on the drinks such as alcohol .I will provide the police with the latest technology so that they can handle the cases easily and control crimes in the country. I will provide the judiciary with the modern techniques. I will make the country’s investigation agencies more and more strong. When there is law and order in the country the foreign investors will come and they will invest in various fields, which will be very beneficial for the country’s economy. It will not only create jobs but will boost up the country’s economical and social power. In this way the country will develop economically and socially.

I will provide small loans to the poor people so that they can earn instead of begging. I will start the micro finance scheme. As we have a very good example of Dr younis, the chairman of grameen bank and a Noble laureate whose hard efforts had given Bangladesh a way to develop and decrease poverty. I will build some boarding houses for the beggars to live over there and I will provide them opportunities to start a small business. I will also establish such banks, which provide small loans to the farmers so that the country must be strong from the agriculture point of view. I will develop sports in my country so that the students who are interested in sports can show their talent in the field of sports. These all my efforts will bring peace and bear fruitful results. In the last but not the least, As I am a ruler for one week only, so I will select a person by means of interview who will be highly qualified, honest etc to run the country by his strong leadership and. The steps taken by me can bear fruitful result if they are handled in correct way. I will pray for my country that they may have a leader like me for more than one week so that the country can develop rapidly and in this way a country can develop by leaps and bounds.

Give Your Family a Health Makeover

Posted by admin | 24/06/10 | Tagged Sports Drinks

Have you ever wished that ketchup were considered a vegetable? It would ease so much parental guilt.

The issue of family nutrition is ripe for guilt. The choices we as parents make have a direct effect on the health of each member of our family. Yet our daily life routine can make it difficult to create healthy mealtimes and habits. Still, until our kids reach a certain age, we are responsible for helping them make the choices that will guide them through adulthood.

Here are fourteen tips for giving your family a health makeover.

1. Do a Body Mass Index (BMI) check. Is everyone in your family at an optimal weight? Find out by using a BMI calculator (which you can find by doing a simple Google search for “BMI Calculator.” Enter the height and weight of each family member. Take a minute to talk about healthy weight and height and all the benefits of living a healthy life, from improved energy to the decreased likelihood of certain diseases. Make a plan together to help everyone get to his or her optimal weight in the months to come. There are lots of support networks and diets online that can help you achieve this end, for people of ages.

2. Write down your goals. As a family, write down what each person pledges to do in the coming weeks and months to become a healthier person. It is best to start with one or two specific goals. If you choose too many things at first, you are more likely to become overwhelmed and quit. Small changes can lead to big differences in your life.

3. Make your health goals into a family game. Talk about the healthy choices each person made each day. Reward these choices on a daily or weekly basis.

4. Cut down on soft drinks. Replace one or two sugary soft drinks or energy drinks each day with water. You can add a splash of lemon or lime juice if it helps make plain water more palatable at first. Once you start drinking a lot of water, you will begin to crave it, and you will no longer feel like the sugary drinks do much to quench your thirst.

5. Drink more water. A good rule of thumb is to drink one-half ounce of water for every pound of body weight. Calculate out how much water each person in your family should be drinking each day. Once you are hydrated, you may find that you sleep better and are better able to keep your moods on an even keel, too.

6. Eat breakfast together. Enjoying a family mealtime is a great way to stay emotionally connected. Start your day with the family by eating a nutritious breakfast. Make sure to include some form of lean protein to help you maximize your energy.

7. Exercise together. Think of ways you can combine family togetherness with exercise. Take a walk together in the evenings, and go sledding or bicycling on the weekend.

8. Is there anywhere you can walk instead of drive as a family? Or consider taking your bikes.

9. Subscribe to healthy living magazines and encourage everyone to read about the latest research on how nutrition affects our lives, and stay motivated to exercise and live a healthy, fit life. A good fitness magazine can be tremendously motivating.

10. Cut down on your television. If you do watch TV, watch it together as a family and use the programming as spark for family conversations.

11. Turn off the TV when you eat breakfast or dinner together. Without the accompaniment of TV or radio, you’ll be more aware of what you are eating, and how much you are eating. Plus, you will be able to more closely bond with your family during the meal. Start each meal with a ritual conversation starter. “What was the best thing about your day?” is a great one.

12. In addition to TV time, try limiting video games and computer time, too. Plan a family game night with a favorite board game. Do household chores together. Join an organized sports league.

13. Make healthy alternatives readily available. Set a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter, as well as bowl of carrots, broccoli, sugar snap peas and raw broccoli.

14. Go easy on yourself. Remember that the example you set will be followed by your children. One of the most important methods for creating a healthy family is to make your health and fitness a priority by staying active and making nutritious food choices, and they likely will, too.
