Is the war on supplements and natural remedies justifiable?
How dangerous are supplements and natural remedies that has the FDA declaring war on your right to purchase natural alternatives?
A recent report in the journal Clinical Toxicology shows that there was not one death caused by any vitamin including A, B, C, D or E supplements in 2008. Not one.
What’s more, there wasn’t one death caused by amino acids, herbals, homeopathics, or mineral supplements.
Not a single man, woman, or child died from nutritional supplements.
Yet nearly 125,000 people die each year from FDA-approved prescription drugs. That’s twice the number of casualties we suffered during the Vietnam War.
That’s a tragedy. And it’s a war that is happening every year.
In addition, prescription drugs cause 2.2 million adverse reactions each year.
That’s not all.
Nearly five percent of all hospital admissions – more than 1 million per year – are due to drug side effects.
What’s worse, the FDA and corporate America have a history of suppressing safe alternatives that work. CoQ10 is a good example of this.
Back in 1990, Merck knew that statins deplete CoQ10. They knew that this could contribute to heart disease. In that year, Merck was granted a patent by the FDA for Mevacor and other statin drugs containing CoQ10.
These statin drugs with CoQ10 help prevent congestive heart failure.
However, Merck has not brought these drugs to market. Nor have they educated physicians on the importance of supplementing CoQ10 to offset the dangers of these drugs.
They patented it and let it sit there simply to keep it off the market.
But because they hold the patent, other drug companies are prevented from coming out with a statin/CoQ10 product that could save lives.
The bottom line of this article is, that you need to stay informed and not be misled by those who don’t have your best health interests at heart.
"No one under 80 should get heart disease, and if you have enough vitamins
and no genetic defects you can stop a cancer cell from ever forming."

As justifiable as my war on the religious sections religious fruitcakes and report trolls who cost me my first account. Good day old bean.

Of course it’s not justifiable. To determine the cause of this and other cases of abuse of consumers’ trust, it’s just a matter of "following the money".
If we were generally healthy, how would health care providers and pharmaceutical companies make (compare: earn!) obscene profits?
I love this site: http://www.earthclinic.com/remedies.html
Stevia, a natural sugar alternative, is another great case in point. So evil it languished unapproved as a food, and was only approved as a supplement until a couple big companies patented PART of it, and presto! it’s approved as a food. Now it’s just wonderful, in every grocery store because there’s PROFIT to be made. Sheesh… (Buy the whole form of Stevia – the whole extract – from a health food store, great stuff: 300x sweeter than sugar, zero calories, the body doesn’t recognize it as sugar, so it’s great for diabetics, and you can even cook with it!)
Thank you for taking the time to write this to help educate us!

Its not that they do harm directly. The problem is people may favor using this b**ls**t instead of treatments that might actually cure them. It also can cost people ignorant of the facts alot of money for no results. Incidentally Mr. Passwaters degree seems to be from Bernadean University which is not an accredited university check here for more info http://www.quackwatch.org/04ConsumerEducation/Nonrecorg/bernadean.html. But if you want to waste your money on this stuff go ahead "a fool and his money are easy parted"

As an herbalist and a Reiki practitioner, I would definitely agree that the "war" is not only unjustified but ridiculous. Natural remedies and prescription drugs are both valid, with many good things about both genres of medicine. Why not use both together, the way they were meant to be used? Makes sense to me. that way, a physician could recommend either ibuprofen or feverfew for pain, for example, whatever would most benefit the patient.

Not at all.
I am variously informed that the FDA lurches between corruption and incompetence.

Actually:
1. Herbal supplements: cold remedies, diet pills, supplements, and prophylaxis to to illnesses do cause bodily harm whether abused or not. People are under the gross misconception that if it’s "natural" or plant based that it is safer or has no risks. Wrong. The driving force behind this move is the fact that these herbal supplements to lose weight have caused significant liver damage in people and have been shown to have undisclosed or adulterated ingredients. There are a number of medical studies proving this.
2. The FDA is a broken system. They are overwhelmed with new product evaluation and little time and resources to do a thorough job of screening ALL medications. Not to mention that various manufactures have admitted to doctoring their studies when submitting for FDA approval to get their drugs approved (see Vioxx as one example). There needs to be more resources placed into this agency since our health depends on it.
3. Why are the manufacturers so afraid to have their products held to a higher quality standard? I have heard one argument that it places a large financial burden on manufacturers and will put some out of business. I have read and heard that this is a multibillion (yes-billion with a "b") industry because of the fact that people are looking for safer alternatives to medications due to the side effects and possible health dangers associated with medications. So, where is the financial risk?
4. These supplements, if there are of high quality, are drugs. They have an effect on the human body and it’s systems just as would any other "medical pharmaceutical" would. My case in point is that a person with high blood pressure should never take goldenseal. Period. It raises blood pressure and can cause a dangerous reaction between their medical condition and the herb’s function as well as it’s other uses. Another is St Johns Wort. A favorite alternative treatment to depression, but it is only meant for uni-polar depression. People with bi-polar are advised not to take this herb as it can cause them to destabilize and start to rapid cycle in their condition. No one understands why this happens as no one has thoroughly studied it as far as the effect it has on brain chemistry, a very complex biochemical function. Finally, there are plenty of warnings on herbal remedies that say not to take them if pregnant without the advice of a medical professional, even the over the counter ones. This is because a number of herbs have an arboficant effect on pregnant women that could cause them to miscarry (Black Cohosh is one of the herbs).
So, while I hate to admit that Sen. Waxman (sponsor of the amendment to the stimulus package that carries this new law) it may not be such a bad idea after all.

How could anyone oppose simply requiring supplements to be tested before they can be marketed as having health benefits?
I can tell you why. Since most of them don’t work at all, it would severely cut into the profits of alternative medicine pushers.
How much do they pay you?

Regulation would make the practice safer and people would know exactly what they are getting, of course it would also highlight the fact that much of it is worthless.
Vitamins are only of any benefit if your body is lacking that particular chemical. Vitamin deficiencies are rare in the western developed world. Just recently there have been concerns about people overdosing on synthetic vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins can be potentially toxic.
Now your comments about conventional drug related deaths is irrelevant.
"No one under 80 should get heart disease, and if you have enough vitamins
and no genetic defects you can stop a cancer cell from ever forming."
Arteriosclerosis is to a certain extent, part of the natural ageing process , genetics play a part, but poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and alcohol are the main factors in accelerating this process. A healthy diet (ensuring adequate nutrition) is important and something we always advise.

let’s see, if i were the devil and in charge of health care, i probably would: give people treatments that didn’t help them get well, but added more health problems and death, start disease foundations that never find a cure for anything, but sell people false hope taking donations endlessly, scare them away from things that could help them, use my ill gotten gain to "lobby" lawmakers for unfair advantage over competitors, invent and force the consumption of frankenfoods, have doctors who’s conscience and good intentions lead them to step outside the constraints of standard accepted failure disciplined or maybe prosecuted, try to outlaw the availability of health promoting supplements, even corrupt those institutions where natural health care has been taught, and, of course, charge a fortune for it all. hey, guess what?

If you think quacks, frauds and charlatans should be allowed to go around selling bogus treatments that don’t do anything and are potentially dangerous, to the sick elderly and vulnerable, then you are as deplorable as they are.
You may be able to cherry pick one or two products that have some effect, but the vast majority of alt med doesn’t work, or is BS. Of course there are no deaths directly caused by homeopathy – because homeopathy contains zero active ingredients and is a fraud!
You also don’t mention the millions of lives that are saved or improved by proper medicine every year.
If there is a war going than yes, its justifiable. And given your side has no proper ammunition, you have to resort to lies and logical fallacies to fight it. The more advances medical science makes, the sooner alt med will fade away in oblivion.
