Running for Beginners: Performance Nutrition is Cheaper and Easier Than You Think

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

http://www.StartRunning.com

I woke up in the middle of the night screaming in pain, the muscles in my legs searing and taut. After pacing up and down my hallway for a few minutes I gathered myself. “I was sleeping!” I thought. “How could my legs burn so badly in the middle of the night like that?”

I was about 15, and I had recently joined the cross country team. I was running about 10 miles a day, which was more than I’d ever done previously. I approached my coach the following day and told him about my blowtorch-legs experience. Without saying a word he whirled around and went rooting through his duffel bag. He handed me a banana. “What’s this?” I asked. “It’s Mother Nature’s fire extinguisher,” he coolly replied.

Nowadays, as I train to run across the country to raise money for homeless youth, I realize that it’s not the banana’s bright yellow sheath that won over my coach so long ago. It’s the potassium.

Bananas are one of nature’s most potassium-rich offerings. To put it simply, potassium acts as a lubricant for your joints and muscles. It’s like oil in your car. Beginning runners should never pass up bananas when rolling through the grocery store, as each one of these little miracle fruits contains an average of 450mg of of this runner-essential element.

Think about it. Here is this wonderful yellow fruit. It’s inexpensive, easy to find and compact. You can buy a bunch and keep them on top of your refrigerator for up to a week. And if they spoil, just throw ‘em in the freezer and you’ve got the main ingredient for a tasty banana bread recipe.

It’s the potassium that will keep your muscles in good shape for daily running routines, but bananas are chock full of several other essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C, which helps your body fend off infection, is abundant in bananas. So is Vitamin B, which aids metabolism. Need more fiber to ease digestion? Bananas are fiber-rich.

But perhaps the biggest added bonus from our yellow friend is its natural energy boost.

Hi, my name is Darin & I am a World Class Prof. Drug-Free for Life 44 year old Bodybuilder, business owner, husband & Father. In the past, I have struggled to balance my life.

Most of my clients are hard working business owners, parents, & stay at home house moms who want less stress, more time, energy, & fulfillment.

My Promise to you is that I will show you how to not only get an amazing physique, but I will give you a precise, personal (exactly for you) total plan of attack that will allow you to do it in a way that feels good. If you are looking for a deeper approach to health, strength, & vitality; then you need this proven system.

My 300 page e-book The “FATLOSS LIFESTYLE 12 Week Body Transformation System will give you the tools to take your body & your life to the next level. Whether you are a competitive bodybuilder who wants to get some great contest prep tips and or smooth out your life in between contests, or you are the gym rat who wants to take your physique to the next level, or a sedentary 40 year old that needs to get active.

BODYBUILDING NUTRITION

To gain muscle and lose fat you must;

• Take in slightly less calories than you are burning

• Consume higher quality calories. Eat more natural unprocessed foods that don’t come wrapped in a box. If it rots, it’s good for you: Lean (protein with low amount of fat, aka chicken & turkey breasts, lean beef, eggs), Green (vegetable, green beans, salads, apples), & Marine (fish).

• Small meals often. You must eventually work up to 5-6 small meals per day; about every 3-4 hours

• Macronutrient Profile- Every meal you eat should contain protein and carbs combined together. How much? A starting point would be;

1. Most women and under 130 lb. men 15-20 grams of protein in each meal
2. 130 lb. — 165 lb. men 20-30 grams of protein in each meal
3. 170 lb. and up 30-45 grams of protein in each meal

One of the biggest “nutrition Secrets” in the Bodybuilding world is a technique called carb cycling. In a nut shell you have two different types of carbs.

Starchy carbs—Sources are brown & wild rice, oatmeal, whole grain pasta, sweet potatoes / yams

Non-starchy carbs—Sources are veggies, grean beans, salads, apples, grape-fruit

Cycle your calories by eating only non starchy carbs with your protein on Interval Cardio days and throw in your starchy carbs only on days you train intensely with weights. This is absolutely t he secret for you to keep your metabolism revved up while you gain muscle and lose fat.

You can work-out till your blue in the face but if you do not incorporate Interval Cardio (done first thing in the morning in a fasted state), intense functional multi-joint, compound exercises, small healthy meals often with protein and carbs combined together, positive mindset, goal setting & social support (you will turn into who you hang around) you will not change your body much. Physique development is about losing fat
(to show the shape of the muscle) as much if not more than building muscle. It is definitely a combination of the two.

But if you do focus on “The Three Pillars of Health” you will radically change your waistline, your lifestyle, and your life. For more incredible before and after testimonials;

Nutrition and Your Mental Health

Nutrition by Natalie

Nutrition and Your Mental Health

What does nutrition have to do with mental health? You might be surprised to find out the truth behind what happens when a person has a nutritional deficiency.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause all sorts of psychiatric symptoms including apathy, low energy, irritability, insomnia, low energy, agitation, fatigue, concentration problems, aches and pains, weight changes, including weight loss or weight gain. Sound a lot like the symptoms of depression? The truth is the average American diet of fast food is low in vital nutrition that you need for your body to function correctly.

This isn’t to say that all depression is caused by bad nutrition but it’s certainly a contributing factor in many cases and poor nutrition will always make depression worse. Antidepressant drugs also do not correct nutritional problems. So if your depressed because of nutritional problems an antidepressant will only partially cover up the problem and you body still won’t function correctly.
